Click on the links above to get a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding the debate over the states of Jammu and Kashmir, an area of land in northwestern India that has been a source of conflict between India (Hindu) and Pakistan (Muslims) for many years. After doing some background research respond to the following question.
Imagine you a world leader who has remained neutral (you do not favor India's position or Pakistan's) in the debate over which country (India or Pakistan) should have control of Jammu and Kashmir.
How would you attempt to resolve the conflict that exists over this area of land? Remember you should propose a solution that you think both India and Pakistan would agree to. When thinking of a solution keep in mind what both India and Pakistan want.

I think that the best way to solve this is to put under another countries control until the conflict between the two countries end then let them both live in the land peacefully but still controlled by the country who controlled at first.
ReplyDeletePersonnaly, I think that the best way to solve the porblem would be to mix both religious parties in PAkistan and India. And also, mix the 2 countries into 1 major country.
ReplyDeleteI would split Kashmir in two from top to bottom. India would get the right side and Pakistan would get the left side. Then when they settle their differences they could do what they want
ReplyDeleteI think that the best solution would be to divide Kashmir in half and Pakistan can have half and India can have half.
ReplyDeleteI think that the best way to resolve this is to give both regions to another countries like China, and let the Hindus move back to India and the Muslims back to Pakistan
ReplyDelete-Matt Papalambros
I don't agree with Jake, but I think that having the religious parties under the control of a different country would cause more fighting and death.
ReplyDeleteSome poeple might ask what country might control Kashmir during the dispute solves out. I think a country that is tolerant of other religions should control Kashmir because eventually both religions will live in there.
ReplyDeleteI think the best way to solve this problem would be to split Kashmir into two countries so both religions could be happy.
ReplyDeleteI think that Alains idea is also a good solution because the land would get evenly split in half witch could resolve the fighting
ReplyDelete@ Jacob I disagrre with Jacob. What happens when that country wants full control of Kashmir? Then there will be 3 countries that want the area creating an even bigger conflict and everyone will have to choose sides
ReplyDeleteI think Eli's idea is good because if the religions were mixed throughout the country, there would be more diversity. One problem that could arise is that there may be conflicts within the countries between the religoions which might be a bigger problem than the one now.
ReplyDeleteI think the best way to solve the conflict is to split Kashmire into 2 so that both counrties can get what they want and have peace.

woops spelled disagree wrong!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kate because it looks like on a map it is split in half. i think a divide would not be a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteyah i agree with both kates
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kate because I think this would be the best way to solve this problem instead of fighting over who gets it.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Delia and Kate but what if one half had more naural rescources than te other?
ReplyDelete@ Kate
ReplyDeleteI think that idea is good but wont history just repeat itslf? When India was split it created conflict and if Kashmir is split it might create another conflict in that area
In Kashmir, there's a line of control dividing the region. But along that line, there are acts of voilence between Muslims and Hindus. "Since Sept. 11, India has said that it will go to war unless the cross-border attacks end." So maybe, instead of putting a line in the middle of Kashmir, they should split Kashmir into two parts, one for Pakistan and the other for India. That way, at least they're in a way "seperate" from each other and it'll be equal?
ReplyDeleteI think that if they did what Matt suggested, China might feel like they had been taken advantage of, or they all together wouldnt allow India or Pakistan to have any of their country. This might casue more fighting and conflict.
ReplyDeleteJacob, I didnt agree with what you said because they would just have to get into wars and it wouldnt make a difference.
ReplyDeleteNow that I look at Kashmir, I think that the land should go to a different county besides India or Pakistan. It will possibly stop fighting between Hindus and Muslims
ReplyDeleteAlain i was thinking the same as you
ReplyDeleteI would try to negociate a deal with the current leaders of Pakistan and India and try to create a more peaceful relationship between both countries. To stop the fighting, I would send in more reliable authorities to guard over and protect the people in the areas of Kashmir and Jammu. I don't think that violence would solve anything, so I would try to solve the conflicts between the 2 nations peacefully.
ReplyDeleteKate brings up a really good point about history repeating itself, with splitting India. You never know, that could happen if they split up Kashmir.
ReplyDeletei agree with most of the people because i think it is a problem to solve instead of fighting over something.

I agtree with Eli when he doesn't agree with matt on his idea of letting Hindus and Muslims go into another country. One because there would just be more fighting and two, What country would agree to let them go live in their country with their past conflicts and fighting.
ReplyDeletei think they should both learn to become tolerant of eachothers religion
ReplyDeleteBut you would be giving more land to Buddhists in China, not taking it away. And you would let the Hindus move back to India and Muslims back to Pakistan, where they wouldnt have to fight over the land any more
ReplyDeleteAGREE!
ReplyDeleteYah then if china was in it the conflict it would be a fight between 3 countries instead of 2
ReplyDeleteI think that Kashmir should be given to India, because it was originally their teritory, Srinagar and Jammu are both in it, and they would not agree ti a treaty in which they got nothing. For Jammu, the residents should vote on which country to belong to. After Kashmir is given to India, and the residents of Jammu vote, a small U.N. peacekeeping force should be sent, to ease the transition. If there is alot of resistance from terrorists, Kashmir and Jammu should be given to India. This will discourage terrorists from attacking.
ReplyDeleteI think India should agree to the plebiscite.I think that is a peaceful way to end it.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with Alain.Split kashmir in two you'll just create another India and Pakistan situation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jack. That plan could resolve the situation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lyynda and I think they should agree to the plebiscite.
ReplyDeleteI think a good solution is having the Kashmire divided equally, that way India and Packistan would have peace with one another. When it is divided equally, they prbably will stop fighting with on another and use eachother for thier own advantages. I also thinks it is a good idea for it to be split evenly because it will so both countries that they are equal in power. Say if India got the entire kashmire than they will think they are better than Packistan.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of what lynda said I also agree with her point. They might not stop fighting and the kashmire divided equally would start a whole other different fight. Each country would probably want more land.
ReplyDeleteJack, just because India had the land first doesn't mean that they should get the land back. I think it should be given to both Packistan and India.
ReplyDeletei agree with Caitlin, i dont think its fair either.
ReplyDelete~Kate Mulvey~
I agree with you caitlin i think they should stop fighting with each other and just start something else.

I agree with lynda to...
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eli i think the best soultion is to make both rivls make and truce with out tricks and betrayl
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jack. Since Kashmir was India's to begin with, it should stay that way. But the problem is that it won't stop the fighting between the muslims and hindus. I'm not even sure if there is a fool-proof way to stop this rivalry.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Linda's reply to Alain's post about splitting Kashmir. I also believe that even more rivalries would come up and start the india and pakistan situation all over again.
ReplyDeleteI agrre with Maja. There's no real way to stop all the fighting between Muslims and Hindus. But you have to try, and the nest way to stop the fighting is to compromise, which is why I wanted India to have Kashmir, and Jammu to vote on which side to join. That way, India gets Kashmir, and Pakistan gets their vote.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with matt Papalabrose's post. Neither coutry would agree to give land to China, and it wouldn't solve anything, either. Their would still be Hindus and Muslims fighting.- Jack C.
ReplyDeletei also disagree with Matt, i think their would still be a conflict if it was given to China.
ReplyDelete~kate mulvey~
I think that they should make a treaty and have terms and conditions that each country agreed with and then made it one country again. After the treaty i think a third country like the U.S should keep things under control and keep people from fighting.
ReplyDeletei agree with jacob, a third country should come in and help.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with kate spliting kashmir in two and giving half to each side might solve alot of the conflict.
ReplyDeletei agree with mike when he said that they should have just made a treaty in just dividing the countries
ReplyDeleteI think that everyone should just have became tolerant of other religions
ReplyDeletei agree with jack when he said that kasmir should be givin to India
