  2. Meaghan,
I definitly found it interesting that The Topokapi housed ten moseques, fourteen bathhouses, two hospitals, two thousand women and four thousand horses. I thought it was really cool that a building could hold so many things.

5 things i found interesting were...

1.The Ottomans tolerated other religions and not just Islam.
2.They had a really good army because they had guns and cannons which helped the capture Constantinople
3.Suleyman was a really good leader but also i leader in which people questioned him
4.Suleyman sparked a period in similar to the Rennaisanse in the mUslim world with new art and literature
5.Churches were transformed into mosques though many Christian features remained

    1 question i have is...
Why did the Ottomans' control of Europe last so long?

  3. The 5 things I found interesting were:
    1. Sulleyman surrounded himself with writers, artists and poets and also wrote poetry himself.
    2. Sulleyman gave some slaves the oppurtunity to move up in the ranks by giving them jobs.
3.Sulleyman let people be any religion they wanted as long as they payed taxes because he relized that forcing people to convert to Islam would cause rebellion, wars and hatred towards him.
    4. Future Sultans had their brothers strangled and encouraged their sons to kill each other off so they would be the leaders.
    5. Christian boys, called Janissaries, were taken and made into slaves. Though this was hard on the families many oppurtunites were present for the Janissaries such as going to school and learning Turkish , Arabic, and Persian so that they could adminster the Ottoman Empire and get heigher ranking jobs then they other wise would have had.
Question: Why was the Sullleyman's death kept secret for so long?

  4. 5 things i found interesting were...
1-That the Ottoman's homeland was not in turkey but on the steppes of Central Asia.
2-That after defeating the Byzantines at manzikert(now in Turkey)in 1071, the turks began a long campaign to take all of the peninsula of Asia Minor
3-The Turkish leaders, called sultans, expanded the Ottomans Empire
4-Although the official religion of the ottomans was islan, they did not try to force this religion on all subjects of the empire
5-Constantinople surrended to Mehmet on may 29, 1453.

I also agree with meaghan that The Topokapi could hold so many things and i agree with kate that the sulleyman surrounded himself with writers and artists and poets and also wrote poetry himself.

  6. Kate:
Sulleyman's death was kept a secret for so long because since he died while his troops were at war, telling people would distract the troops and give their enemy an easier chance to attack because their enemies now know that there is no one in control.
Alexa: I also found it interesting that the ottomans didn't try to force their religion on there people.

  7. Five things that I found interesting:
    1) Something that I thought was interesting was that they kept the death of Sullymans for more then a month after his death because he died when his Empire was at war and if he told the troops they might get depressed and give up.
    2) Another thing that I found interesting was how the Ottoman Empire lasted for 600 years, it eventually ended at the end of World Was 1. I found this interesting because well, 600 years is a really long time for an Empire to last.
    3) Also, I found it interesting that Sullyman let slaves become leaders because in alot of systems it was hard or impossible for people to move around.
    4) A Sultans sons would kill eachother to become the next Sultan. I found this interesting because ti people now that sounds crazy but to peopl eback then it was probably more normal.
    5) The Ottomans main religion was Islam but they didn't enforce it on thier people but they did have to pay taxes. I foun d this interesting because for alot of people religion is very important.

Question: Why did the Empire fall?

  8. Kate,
I also thought it was interesting that even though the families thought it was hard to get thier son taken away there were so many good oppions for them.

  10. The five most interesting thinkgs about the Ottoman Empire was:

    1. Sulleyman was not only named the great for his military greatness, but also for his interest in the arts.

    2. When the Ottoman empire came into greatness, the people that where not Muslim where not forced to convert, as long as they paid their taxes.

    3. When Suleyman was the sultan, he killed his sons so they would not take his rein as the sultan. His greatness never recovered after this.

    4. Suleyman marked a period similar to the rennisance in the Muslim world. They where not that strong but when he came into power, they expanded in their art, literature and military power.

    5. Christian boys, where taken in as slaves at a very young age and although this was bad for the family, they had a chance to move up very high in the government. These boys where called Janissaries.

    Sulleyman's death was a secret

Sulleyman murdered his son and best friend

A wife convinced Sulleyman his most popular and eldest son had a master plan to over throw him because she wanted her son to be heir to the thrown

QU:Why just christian boys as soilders? What was wrong with Jewish guys or any other groups of religious people who were there?

  29. The 5 most interesting things that i learned
    1) Even at the peak of there empire the Ottomans still allowed others to keep there own faith.

    2) How just simple things like gun powder and cannons things that are very out dated today where the keys to the reason why there was a Ottoman empire.

3)Christian boys, where taken in as slaves at a young age at the end of wars insted of talking real prisoners;this was bad for the family, they had a chance to move up very high in the government.

4)Suleyman was a really good leader but also a leader in which people questioned him for his crazy thought that people who practed other religions could still be part of the empire as long as they paid there taxes.

5)Finally the fact that churches had to become mosques. That makes no sences because I thought that if you were part of the empire you had free relgion.

    QUESTIONS
    1) Why were churches had to become mosques if people had freedom of religion
2)Why was Make-up warn by Suleyman

    Responces
    George--
I think that Suleyman got his love for the arts by not only focusing on the DYnasty but what joys life can bring when you sit down and smell the roses.
    Caroline--
The empire was kept for so long because of the strenght of the empire which could be linked to the fact taht gun powder and cannons were the best weapons.

  33. i found that
1: the ottoman empire stayed in place till around the end of WW1
2: suleyman was the greatest leader of all
3: during suleymans rule, the muslim empire experienced an age similar to the renaissance
4: the main reason why the ottoman army was so powerful was because of their status of having a "modern" army(armed with guns, gunpowder weapons, etc)
5: the fall of constantinople was due to the mega bombards of the ottomans, the ottoman ships, and the falling point was when a gate was left open, and the janissaries poured in.

    no questions

    meghan g,
suleyman was a king, but he was known as an emperor

    andrew,
