Judaism is a part of everyday life for some jews. But if you do not practice the religion heavily it may not be. It is part of everyday life on the sabbath, because they are not supposed to work.

It is both a religion and ethnicity because people sometimes refer to Jewish people as Jews whereas people don't refer to Christians as just Christians. It is a religion because its a religion :).

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have a QUESTION

What are the origins of the Arab/Israeli conflict?
    Or, how did it start

    ReplyDelete
  40. Dear Kendall,

Being Jewish in a religion is being part of the religious movement and believing in Judaism.

But the great majority of Jews become a part of the movement by birth and not due to their beliefs. The ethnicity Jewish is bestowed on the babies of Jewish mothers and stays with them no matter what religion they practice.

i.e. Your mom can be Jewish, but you could believe in Christianity.

Judaism is a 4,000 old tradition with ideas about what it means to be human and how to make the world a holy place. Genesis describes the creation of the earliest members of the human race. The Torah refers to the 5 books of Moses

I don't think you can really put Jews in a specific category by saying that they are against gay marriage. Plus that'd be a terrible thing!

    ReplyDelete
  99. To many people,
The thing about gay marriage isn't true. There was a Jewish leader that said a very derogatory comment saying that gay marriage is bad, but that doesn't mean that gay jews can't get married. Even if you are a certain religion it doesn't mean that you have to get married in that church or synagogue or temple. You can get married in a non- religious church, or not even a church at all. You don't even have to be a priest/minister/rabbi to marry a couple, for instance someone from my church (who isn't a minister) married two people because she got a marriage license for one day.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Liz,
Jews celebrate the Sabbath because God told them to. It's the 4th commandment, "4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy".
