Five things I found interesting were
ReplyDelete1) Christian boys were made into slaves which are called Janissaries.

4) Suleyman killed his brother and best friend so that they couldn't take over his thrown but he later felt really guilty about it.
5) Suleyman turned churches into mosques and he hired the best archtects so that they can be really beautiful
Questions:
1) Why did Suleyman keep his death a secret?
Aiden- I think it is also interesting that Sulleyman let people from other religions practice their because Queen Elizabeth didn't allow that.
1.Suleyman started out as a great leader, conquering about 1/2 of the known world at that time, but as he grew older, he became more of a weak and cruel Sultan, killing his favorite son and his best friend. That does'nt make sense (it looks like a split personality).
ReplyDelete2. Mekmet II didn't want anything in the city of Constantinople besides the city itself, but the current Byzantine ruler would give him anything but the city (the physical buildings and walls, I mean).
3. Suleyman hired men to kidnap Christian teenage boys and turned them into Janisseries, and they were forced to convert to Islam and become the main foot soldiers of the Ottoman Army.
4.Suleyman allowed all his subjects freedom of religion as long as they payed taxes and Divrisme was still practiced by them (meaning the families of the Janisseries continued to send their boys to become soldiers).
5.Though the Ottomans conquered 1/3 of Europe and the Middle East, they never ventured farther than that, although it seems that they could have.
Questions: How did Suleyman become a Sultan?
Were Jewish boys also forced to be Janisseries?
Were other religions forced to do so aswell (Buddhists, Hindus, etc.)?
When Suleyman started going bad, why didn't another leader take control?
Who were Suleymans parents?
Aidan: the Ottoman population peaked at 35,350,000 people.
Aidan:What other weapons did the Ottomans use?
Grace: Suleyman kept his death a secret because the death of a leader during battle is usually percieved as a weakness to the enemy (other countries would be more likely to attack).

4. How much do the Janassaries get paid a week?
5. Why do Mehmet the second and his army fire so many canons?
6. When did sulleyman become the sultan of the ottoman empire?
GRACE: I found it interesting that Sulleyman turned churches into mosques and made it more beautiful too. That is very interesting to me. Not only that but if he hired the best architects it had to be good.
ReplyDeleteBRIAN: I found it shocking that Sulleyman killed his own son and his best friend just because he became a weak sultan as he got older. That is just wrong and doesn't make sense to me. Because even if you are weak, that doesn't mean you have to kill someone so close to you. Especially if its your own son.
ReplyDelete1. The Christian families who lived in the land of the Ottomans were taxed and had to give one of their sons to serve the sultan and be part of the Janissaries, an elite group of soldiers in the Ottoman empire.(this practice was called devshirme)

5.Mehmet II and his army conquered the city of Constantinople using different tactics: they used a cannon that fired 1,200 pound boulders at the city walls, they dragged 70 ships over the hill at night and attacked the city on two sides, and they eventually broke through and entered the city.
*Did the Sultan have advisers?
*Why was Suleyman nicknamed "the Magnificent"?
*Did they conduct a big slave trade as the Portuguese at that time?
Jess: I think that Mehmet used many cannons because they were superior to bows and arrows, and the Ottomans needed to get through the walls to take the city
Grace: To add to Brian's answer, Suleyman's death was kept secret for about 43 days while his generals forged his signature on papers and made decisions for him.

Brian: I think it was somewhat normal for people to kill eachother to stay in power, I dont think someone could just take over when Suleyman killed his bestfriend and son.
Ani: Suleyman was nicknamed the magnificant because the arts flourihed in his reign.

Claudy:Another leader didn't have control because they would have had to take power and Sulyman killed off all those candidates.
JESS M: I don't think janisaries got paid because they were forced to become warriors its not like todays military.
