  11. The five most interesting, surprising, and shocking about the Ottomans:
1.I'm interested, surprised, and shocked Constantine stayed to fight to the death instead of fleeing to safety.
2.I'm also interested, surprised, and shocked that Women and children as well stayed and fought in the battle by throwing rocks to defend Constantinople instead of fleeing to have all the children safe.
3.I'm shocked power is what ruined Suleyman's life because lust for power turns people into power hungry ruthless murderers and Suleyman seemed a nice person who didn't care that much on power and wealth.
4.I found it shocking Mehmed the second toppled the Byzantine Empire, captured Constantinople, renaming it Istanbul, making it the new Ottoman capital at the age of 21 yrs old.
5.I'm surprised Ottomans tolerated the other religions such as the Jews and Christians.
    Questions:
Why did Suleyman the Magnificent kill his favorite son and his best friend?
What did Suleyman's wife tell him exactly?
Why were the Christian boys called Janissaries?

  12. Danielle and Madison
If Jews and Christians did not pay their taxes,The Ottomans would kick them out or force them to convert.
They might also as well arrest them and have some harsh punishment.

  16. the FIVE most interesting, surprising, and/or shocking things I have learned about the Ottoman Empire are:
    1) that sulley man who was reconized for his respect in the arts is the same man that had his son and his best friend killed.
2)I also found it supprising that the ottomans would tolerate christianity and judiasm because their rligions from the book but he outlawed shia' muslims not only another religion from the book but also a branch from the official religion of the ottoman empire.3)I'm also supprised that the muslims would make christian boys Janissaries where in most of the world at that point and still much of the world today think that if your not from this religion or race then you are not as good as the people who are and since it created many oportunities, which is why im amazed they didnt give that job to muslims untill later on.4)im also supprised that mhed a a 21 year old man would have such a big impact on the world by taking constantinople and forcing europeans to find a sea route to india , which inspired many country's to sail and explore just because mhemed took over one city in turkey.5) the thing i am most supprised about is that after sulleyman died his advisers and followers pretended he was alive and signed papers for 43 days untill the end of the war.

    Questions:
1)when did the start using muslim boys for the Janissaries?
2)was it possible for a non muslim boy to become a sultan?
3)where the christians and jews part of the ottomans from the begging or did they join in part way through?

  17. Aman sulleyman the magnificent killed his son because his wife had told him that his son was going to try and takeover i believe this is also the reason that sultans later on had started imprisoning their sons,

  18. Zach,
evn though im supprised they only used christian boys also i believe it might be because they where the largest part of the population and i'm not sure on this part but maybe also tokeep their famileis in line like other groups throught history have done even though im not sure because they seem to tolerate them in every other way
