1) What are the TWO most interesting, surprising, and/or shocking things you have learned about Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam? Make sure you post two things for each religion (5 religions x 2 comments =10 total)

2) What questions do you still have about Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity or Islam?

  1. The most interesting things i have learned in all of the religions we have studyed were...
    1.)Christianity: the three was mind are the reason why christians exchange gifts on Christmas and that christians put lights out on Christmas becasue it reminds them of the north star when Jesus was born.
    2.)Judaism: when they have a bat/bar Mitzvah the girls usually have theirs when they are 12 and the boys have it when they are 13 and that this religion is the base of Christianity.
    3.)Islam: that girls have to wear hajbs on their heads to cover up and that the holiday Ramadan is very important to them and during that period of time they have to fast during sun rise to sunset for 10 to 11 days.
    Hinduism:The religion, Hinduism, began in India in the year 3,000 BC and it began when the Aryans and the Indus Valley Combined and that The Upanishads (book of knowledge) is the second Holy Book. This is a religious writing which tells about a universal spirit present on Earth.
    Buddhism:Siddhartha Gautama is the founder of the religion Buddhism. Siddhartha was a wealthy Indian prince that was shielded by all of the villagers. He was also raised in the religion Hinduism and that The ultimate goal for Theravada Buddhism is to become Buddha. The ultimate goal for Mahayana Buddhism is to become Bodhisattvas. The ultimate goal for Buddhist is to become one with Buddha and to be enlightened.

    1) They believe in a caste system.
    2) There is no single founder because the Aryans invaded and made a religion with the Indus Valley people.

    Buddhism
    1) There are 4 different types of Buddhists, Therevada, Mahayana, Vajrayana (Tibetan), Zen
    2) The way Siddhartha Gautama was hidden from suffering in the world was what influenced him to find the superior enlightenment.

    Judaism
    1) There are three types of Judaism, Orthodox, Conservative, and Reformed.
    2) The five things prophets were told to do were:
    -They told how god wanted them to live.
    -They warned people to obey God's law.
    -Moral behavior.
    -The rich and powerful should protect the poor and weak.
    -In God's eyes, everyone is equal.

    Christianity
    1) John the Baptist was thought to be the Messiah until he baptized Jesus.
    2) When Jesus resurrected from the dead, people didn't believe he was alive in this order:
    -Mary Magdalene told people and they thought she lost her mind.
    -They saw Jesus and still didn't believe it even through how he said something.
    -They finally believed after the physical touching.

    Islam
    1) There are still many disagreements between the Israelites and the Palestinians as of today because the Israelites took Palestine away.
    2) Islam is often stereotyped as terrorist even though the majority of the religion is terrorist.

    1. Catholics believe that the pope is the second authority after God.
    2. The Golden Rule is treat others the way you want to be treated.

    Judaism-
    1. Most Jews practice Kosher.
    2. One of the reasons why they believe Jesus isnt the Messiah because he didnt build the third temple.

    Islam-
    1.They believe Muhammad was the last prophet.
    2.Mosques are more than a place of worship but also used as schools, community centers, and a place to feed to poor.

    Hinduism-
    1.Hindusim began in the Indus River Valley.
    2. KNown as vegetarians because they believe that cows are sacred.

    Buddhism-
    1. Do not believe in the Caste System.
    2.The ultimate goal is to reach nirvana.

    1. Hindus practice the Caste System.
    2. Hindus consider their religion to be montheistic because they believe in one god who appears in many different avatars.

    Buddhism:
    1. Buddhists worship in temples, stupas, and pagodas.
    2. Buddhism is the fourth largest religion in the world.

    Judaism:
    1. Jews consider it important to live in Israel because god said it was the Promise Land.
    2. The wailing wall is important to Jewish people because it is the place where Jews believe the messiah will reappear to bring peace and Harmony to the world.

    Christianity:
    1. Sunday is the holiest day for Christians and is a day of rest.
    2. Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead.

    Islam:
    1. The Koran is the Islamic holy book.
    2. The Islamic word for god is Allah

  6. caroline i also found it interesting that woman have to wear hijabs to cover their hair,neck, face and body because in our culture it seems oppressive and discriminatory to woman but in the Muslim culture it is accepted as a way to protect women.

    Buddhism: 1.The word buddha means "enlightened one".
    2.Buddha rejected the caste system.

    Judaism: 1. Most jews believe in keeping kosher.
    2.Do not believe that jesus was killed because they believe that god would never let him die in the hands of humans.

    Christianity: 1.Christians believe jesus was the son of god.
    2.Easter is the most important holiday because that was the day of jesus's resurection.

    Islam: 1. the word islam means "surrender to Allah".
    2. thier holy book is the koran.

    Hinduism-
    -has no single founder
    -Most hindus are found in Nepal,bali and bangladesh.
    Buddhism-
    -teachings of Sidartha Gautama,also known as Buddah.
    -Buddah taught between the 4th and 6th century.
    Judaism-
    -it has been here for more then more than 3000 years. It is one of the oldest monotheistic religions, and the oldest to survive into the present day.
    -The largest religious movements are orthodox, conservative and reform Judaism.
    Christianity-
    -Based on the life and teachings of jesus and "the new testement"
    -Christians also believe that jesus was the Messiah,and that jesus came back to life after being reserected and Mary Magdeline was the first one to see her and everyone thought she was going crazy.
    Islam-
    -Most muslims of islam are either sunni and Shia
    -Muhammad married a window rich lady so he could focus on the meaing of life and he was also the founder of Islam, he was regared as a messanger and a prophet.

    2. The caste system is very important in this religion.

    1. Meditation is a huge part of their religion
    2. The founder was an Indian prince but still rejected the caste system.
    Judaism:
    1. They follow dietary laws called Kosher
    2. That they still speak Hebrew in there services while other religions have changed from the original.
    Christianity:
    1. Jesus was brought back from the dead
    2. The Roman Empire had a large effect on the spreading of Christianity

    1. People think that the religion is dangerous.
    2. They do not allow people to draw pictures of Muhammad

    Hinduism:
    1. Hinduism is a monotheistic religon even though they have many god, they are ussualy mistaken as a poliestic religon because they have many gods but Brahman takes many forms.
    2. Wasn't founded by an actual person but by the mixing of cultures between the Arayans and Indus river valley people

    Buddhism:
    1. The overall goal for Buddhists is to become enlightened, just like Buddha.
    2. In order to reach Nirvana, follow the eightfold path and four noble truths

    Judaism:

    1. The three types of Judauism are Orthodox, Reformed and Conservative
    2. Jews do not believe Jesus as a Messiah because he didnt build the 3rd temple and didnt bring world piece

    Christianity:
    1. Sunday is the holiest day of the week, where everyone goes to church and doesn't work
    2. All of the Christian holidays are revovled around Jesus, Christmas, Easter and Good Friday

    Islam:
    1. Islamaphobia is the fear of Islam and is a very common phobic fear.
    2. Mohammed was the founder and a prophet of god and Allah is god and only god.
